YES, I think the news deserves an exclamation point (maybe two!!).
Here is your PayPal link for purchasing all-festival passes for our mid-summer Roxie extravaganza, the long-awaited A RARE NOIR IS GOOD TO FIND 3. 13 films, $75.
MANY of our chits with “friends in dark places” were called in to create a suitable follow-up to our earlier entries in this series. The result is a festival lineup that is replete with ultra-rarities (see our earlier Substack post detailing how nine of these films have never had an American theatrical premiere prior to RARE NOIR 3).
Of especial note are the Greek noirs (a national cinema that has remained stubbornly elusive to American audiences), the “beat-the-New-Wave-at-its-own-game” narrative dislocations in Norway’s THE CHASERS, and—of course—the presence of Tastuya Nakadai in two films firmly in the harrowing-for-vastly-different-reasons category that your “gracious but pugnacious” host especially enjoys presenting.
Those highlights are in no way meant to diminish the power and fascination that pervades all thirteen films in the series, which begins in Mexico with force-of-nature Ninon Sevilla in a blistering caberetara tale (AVENTURERA) and ends in Brazil with the “favela noir heist film” ASSAULT ON THE PAY TRAIN, one of the highlights of our first international noir festival eight years ago.
THE weekend of August 11-13 will be an especially rich and varied experience for all noir aficionados, with ten MCP-curated films spread over the three days: six at the 4-Star Theater (six entries in our FRANCO-AMERICAN NOIR series playing there on August 11-12), followed by the first four entries in RARE NOIR 3 at the Roxie.
As you know, seating for the Roxie shows remains in the little theater, so seats are lamentably scarce…so please indulge us with your continued support and pick up an all-festival pass while supplies last. As is often the case with our presentations, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it’s a lineup I’m especially pleased and proud to be able to present.
Here’s that PayPal link again, so that you won’t have to scroll back up to look for it! (Single tickets will go on sale in August once pass sales have closed.)
Hoping to see many familiar, smiling-through-the-darkness faces at the Roxie for RARE NOIR 3 starting on Sunday, August 13th. As Phoebe Green taught me to say: merci d’avance!
